Matera began as a personal tribute to a city that, at that time, had become a symbol of Basilicata and of a new sense of possibility for Southern Italy.

The work comes from the moment immediately before the opening ceremony of Matera European Capital of Culture. I tried to capture the expectation and excitement of the local people before the beginning of the event.

I did not want to create a simple postcard view. I was interested in focusing on people’s experiences, on the enthusiasm of the moments that precede an event and often remain impressed in memory regardless of what happens afterwards.
