The first difficult choice in Tribute to the Rolling Stones was deciding which image of the band to represent.
The Stones have spanned decades of music, line-up changes, and different visual identities. In the end, I chose to portray the Rolling Stones of the early years, also to create a link with the work dedicated to the Beatles and to bring both bands back to the years when one of the most famous rivalries in music history was taking shape.
It was the most difficult calligram I had made up to that point, and also the work that took me the longest overall. This was due not only to the number of faces and words, but also to the challenge of handling the 100×70 cm format, from the initial drawing to the ink work and the addition of color. The piece required around 250 hours of work, not including the earlier lyric research and selection.
